Introduction to Nouns





Noun -

 

A Noun is a word that identifies a person, place,animal, thing or idea. 

 

Example -

              - That is John.        

                             (John is the name of person)

 

             -  The cat is chasing the rat.

                             (cat and rat is the name of animal)

 

              -  The clock was broken.

                             (Clock is the name of thing)

 

              -  London is a large city.

                             (London is the name of place)

 

There are five kinds of nouns.

1 . The Common Noun.

2.  The Proper Noun.

3.  The Collective Noun.

4.  The Abstract Noun.

5.  The Material Noun. 

 

  * The Common Noun-

 

   A Common Noun is the name of a non specific person, place   or thing.

  Such as - man, table, tree etc.

  Example-

  He bought a new boat for his birthday.

  You should read this book  

 

  * The Proper Noun-

 

  A Proper Noun is the name of a particular person, place   or thing.

  Such as - John, London, India etc.

  Example-

  John played with his brother.

   London is a large city. 

 

  * The Collective Noun-

 

  Collective Nouns are refers to a collection of things or refer to a group.

  Such as - Crowd, Flock, Team etc.

  Example-

  Our team is better then theirs.

  There was a large crowd in the street.

 

  * The Abstract Noun-

 

  Abstract Noun is the of name of quality, action or state.

  Such as - Beauty, Honesty, Joy etc.

  Example-

  Sleep is important for good health.

  The girl showed great courage

 

 * The Material Noun-

 

   Material Nouns are name of material or substances out of which things are made.

   Such as - Silver, Wood, Meat etc.

   Example-

   I purchased a gold ring.

   Plastic is for ordinary use.
