The Present Continuous Tense

The present continuous tense is used to describe an action that is presently going on. Also describe of an action that is going on during this period of time and describe an action or event in the future , which has already been planned or prepared.

How do we make present continuous tense

 

1. Question Sentences

           Are you + main verb + ing. 


2. Affirmative Sentences

           I am + main verb + ing. 



3. Negative Sentences

           I am not + main verb + ing. 



Examples 

Question Sentences                       Affirmative Sentences                       Negative Sentences

Are you playing ?                                  I am playing.                                             I am not playing.

Is he reading ?                                       He is reading.                                             He is not reading.

Are they coming ?                              They are coming.                                     They are not coming.  

 

Good to know

Singular forms are I am, You are, He is, She is, It is.

Plural forms are We are, You are, They are.

 

More examples and use of present continuous tense.

- For actions happening now. 

     * It is raining.

     * I am working at the moment.

     * They are playing.

     * The birds are flying.

- For future arrangements. 

     * I am leaving for Delhi tomorrow.

     * Our grandmother is visiting us at Christmas.

     * Are you doing anything on Sunday morning ?

     * We are going to the beach at the weekend.

 

- Use it for habits that are not regular, but that happen very often. 

     * You are forever losing your wallet.

     * She is always asking questions.

     * Why it is always raining in Goa ?

     * John is always smiling.
